Forgot to mention... cross-drilling the crank is a common practice on performance marine engines

Another little trick is to notch the rods... see the notch on the outboard side of the rod (in the scribed box)
The notches are ground top and bottom of the rod big ends... in theory, they let the oil escape the rod bearings faster thus cooling the bearings more... also the escaping oil is directed up under the HOT piston to better lube and cool the 'pin' and then ultimately ads to the lubrication of the cylinder walls on the way back down

I chose this method in lieu of opening up the rod side clearances too much...

My machinist says it is a complete waste of money, he runs a 5 second Shotgun Ford Pro Mod & definitely knows his stuff. I told him the Chevy Power Manual recommends it for all engines, didn't phase him...

I've heard that also, but some have said that it's application specific
... a 1/4mi. drag car stages for around a minute and runs under load for a matter of several seconds where as... say a roundy-round car runs for a longgg time at near or full throttle continuous, much like a boat does... different worlds

I admit you could be right... who really knows with all engine choices

I did many mods to my boat engines thinking if it doesn't hurt anything and it may do some good... I would do it 'if in theory' it should reduce bearing and cylinder temps

My first boat engine (BB Old's) ran for 13-seasons and my second ran for 10 and I only re-did that one because I wanted more power... I am going into my 4th season with my latest engine... this is all with the same rotating assembly... I just changed blocks

Love building boats. LOL. I spent a ton of money retrofitting a 16ss stern drive from a 2.5l 4 cyl and vintage merc leg to an alpha leg,an over built roller 4.3 and various other expensive parts, only to havethe samenumber of frusterating issues as you. Now what do I have? A partially parted out 16' in my driveway and a 18ss jet in my garage putting a 455 in it. LOL Try again with different boat, I am convinced the boat did not want a bigger engine. LOL

I hear ya,,, big bucket of money,,,,BUT, i'm only into it for $4500, total and its all working good now,,, about
400 HP,,, 4400 RPM,,, 50 MPH and just bought a place diverter,,,
so now im making a small rudder for it,,,, any thoughts on that ???

ps,, the old engine blew up because of improper piston ring gap,,,heated up,, expanded,, ends touched,, seized piston, in hole,,
